…sankta alina… sol koroleva… sun summoner…

My tribute to Alina Starkov from Leigh Bardugo's The Grisha Trilogy, a fantastic series of YA novels set in a Russian-inspired fantasy world and a lovely magic system.  I wanted to show her power (and the amplifiers!) rising out of the Volcra but also a little fear that comes with being an accidental heroine.

Final installment just came out!  Got mine signed by Leigh at the LA Book Release party. *o*  You should pick em up!

Done in traditional media: pen, marker, color pencil on toned paper (as usual).

leigh, if you are reading this, nilah, cassie and i would all gladly work on a grisha movie *coughcough*

OH. MY. WORD. I can’t tell you how much I adore this. Loved seeing the work in progress at the launch but oohhhhhhhh the final!!! Thank you so much for sharing it <3

Genya is such an important character to me, and my love and sympathy for her complexities spilled over when I got through the first third of RUIN AND RISING. As any survivor of assault knows, one of the hardest things is confronting your assailant, and some of us will never get the chance to. People love to rag on YA for being shallow teen fantasy fodder, but I’ve never felt so emotionally vindicated as I was reading Genya standing her ground and demanding justice. For the catharsis, for the justice, for the kindness — thank you, Leigh.

Thank you, Irene. This is everything.

"Motherfuckers will read a book that’s 1/3 elvish, but put two sentences in Spanish and White people think we’re taking over."
— Junot Diaz to the interview question “Do you think using Spanish in your writing alienates some of your readers?”  (via robbstark)

I know him. His name is Polliver. He captured us and took us to Harrenhal . He killed Lommy. He stole my sword and put it right through his neck. He’s still got it.
